Hello!

Hello! My name is Miss Becky, and I am the lucky one who has been chosen to take over the Early Literacy Specialist position here at the library. I love reading, and even more than that, I love helping to instill a love of reading into the minds of little ones like your own! I look forward to sharing books and ideas with you on this blog and will do my best to keep it fun and informative. I’m always happy to hear what you like, what you don’t find as helpful, and what you think I should add more frequently. This blog is for YOU, so your voice counts!

I thought Say Hello by Rachel Isadora was a fitting book to showcase today. It’s a cute story about a little girl, Carmelita, who takes a walk to her grandmother’s house, accompanied by her mother and her dog, Manny. As Carmelita walks through her culturally diverse neighborhood and runs into friends and local shop owners, she says “hello” in English, Spanish, and Mandarin, among other languages. Meanwhile, Manny repeatedly says his version of hello—“woof!”—and is understood by everyone. This book is a good introduction to different languages and cultures, and you and your child will love the bright, beautiful illustrations.

I’m really enjoying getting to know all of the new faces at the library. Please stop by to say “hello,” “hola,” or “ni hao” next time you’re visiting!
