STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) has grown in popularity over the past few years and for good reason! So many jobs require science, technology, engineering, and math backgrounds, and for our country’s work force to thrive, we need students to become proficient in these subject areas.
One easy way to incorporate math into a young child’s life is to read math stories! Math-related stories can help a child see how math is applied to everyday life. You can use the stories as just a general story to read or actually “act” the math problems presented.
There are actually quite a few picture books that incorporate math themes, including one of my childhood favorites, The Doorbell Rang by Pat Hutchins. The story of Ma baking cookies for her two children actually presents itself as division when friends start arriving. The children have to learn how to divide the cookies between them all. Luckily, Grandma saves the day! (And this one would be a very fun story to act out!)
Other great books include the Math in Nature series, the Mouse Math series, and Max’s Math by Kate Banks. Be sure to check out our many other math-related titles! And to boost your math skills, attend our March of the Stuffed Animals program on Monday, March 14 from 6:00-7:00 PM at Centerville Library. Preschool – 2nd Graders can wear their pajamas and bring favorite stuffed animals for a fun creature census, tangram puzzles, and more math fun! We hope to see the little mathematicians there!
