What to Do with Wigglers

Because young children have short attention spans, trying to read to them can be quite a challenge sometimes. Here are some tips for dealing with even the wiggliest of listeners:

-Read for short periods throughout the day instead of trying to read for an extended amount of time. This is a great way to get in plenty of reading time in spite of a short attention span.

-Don’t force reading. If your child’s not at all interested, try again later. It’s important to make sure that your child’s early experiences with books are positive ones.

-Read expressively or even use silly voices when reading. This can sometimes grab the attention of an otherwise disinterested little one.

-Allow your child to do something else while listening to you read. You might be surprised at how much a child can pay attention to a book while using Play-Doh, coloring, or even playing with toys on the other side of the room.

-Find books on topics that interest your child. Picking out stories or non-fiction books that cater to your child’s particular interests can help keep him/her engaged when it’s reading time.

Hopefully these tips will help you handle those wiggly listeners in your life!
