Monsters Go Night-Night

Bedtime rituals are familiar and comforting to many small children. They take a bath, put on pajamas, brush their teeth and have a bedtime story every night. These bedtime rituals get a zany makeover in Monsters Go Night-Night by Aaron Zenz. The book uses an engaging question-and-answer format, posing questions and giving several answer choices. For example, how do monsters clean their teeth? The choices are dental floss, toothpaste, a toothbrush and an octopus. The next page shows the monster using the octopus to clean his teeth! Even very young children will know the expected answers. The monsters’ very silly choices will be sure to cause fits of giggles! Monsters Go Night-Night is a wonderfully silly bedtime story sure to be enjoyed by all!

No, Silly!

Ken Krug’s new book, No, Silly!, is a fun story that will surely get your little one involved. The book starts with a little bear telling about where he likes to sleep—in his bed, in his dad’s big chair, on his mama’s lap…and on cookies. “No, silly! You eat cookies,” responds his porcine pal. Next, the pig starts to list what he likes to eat—corn, apples, ice cream…and books. To that, his mouse friend says: “No, silly! You read books.” The book continues in this way, with each friend giving some real preferences, along with a silly one. Your child will have fun looking at the pictures and picking out the wacky ideas that don’t quite belong with the rest.

How Do YOU Say Goodnight?

What starts out as a seemingly informative bedtime story quickly turns into something much sillier. The first few pages of Lori Joy Smith’s new book, The Goodnight Book, show children around the world being tucked in to bed and told: “goodnight,” “bonne nuit,” and “buenas noches.” The rest of the pages, however, feature silly-looking animals from “far off places” who say things like: “fleep dreams,” “took a boo,” and “darken oy.” The illustrations are what drew me in immediately to this book, but the silliness is what kept me around. This is a great, short bedtime story for some end-of-the-day giggles. It might just even inspire you to create your own, unique way of saying “goodnight!”

A Moose That Says Moo!

“If I were allowed to invent my own zoo, the first thing I’d have is a moose that said ‘moo.’” This first line of Jennifer Hamburg’s new book, A Moose That Says Moo!, sets up the silliness that ensues. From an ox acting as a short-order cook, to bears driving cars and pigs tap-dancing and singing, this book’s narrator shows off her hilariously wild imagination. If the words don’t do the trick on their own, the illustrations will surely leave your little one giggling. On top of that, the rhyming text throughout the book is great to help develop your child’s phonological awareness, since listening to rhyming words helps children hear the smaller sounds in those words.
