I'm Feeling Bitey

Children need help learning how to express themselves in appropriate ways. Try telling your two year old that biting isn't one of them.  Picture books provide an avenue for discussing feelings like frustration and behaviors like sharing.  I love Polly Dunbar's series about Tilly and her friends.  She incorporates fabulous comedic timing with whimsical illustrations to address toddler emotions.  One of my favorites involves Doodle, an alligator, who wakes up feeling "bitey." His many targets, including Tumpty the elephant's ample backside, get more than just their feelings hurt.

Zero to Three, an organization devoted to promoting the health and development of infants and toddlers, recently conducted a national survey of parents and found that respondents did not have informed expectations of when children reach developmental milestones like experiencing various feelings and being able to share/take turns.
